Background of the Study
Poverty alleviation remains a pressing concern in many parts of Kwara State, and vocational education has emerged as a potential strategy to empower secondary school graduates with marketable skills. In Patigi Local Government Area, the persistent cycle of poverty has driven policymakers and educators to explore alternative educational pathways that extend beyond traditional academic curricula. Vocational education, with its focus on skill acquisition and practical application, offers a promising solution for alleviating poverty by equipping young individuals with the competencies necessary for self-reliance and economic empowerment (Akinola, 2023). By integrating hands-on training with entrepreneurial skill development, vocational programs have the potential to transform the socio-economic landscape of Patigi, creating opportunities for sustainable income generation and reducing dependency on formal employment sectors (Oladele, 2024).

The region has historically experienced high rates of poverty due to limited job opportunities and a reliance on subsistence farming and informal trading. With the introduction of vocational training, secondary school graduates are increasingly exposed to technical skills in areas such as tailoring, carpentry, welding, and information technology. These skills are directly linked to income-generating activities and can significantly improve the financial stability of households (Akinola, 2023). Additionally, vocational education fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, which are essential attributes for initiating small-scale businesses and promoting self-employment. The incorporation of entrepreneurial training within vocational curricula further enhances the ability of graduates to start and manage their ventures, thereby contributing to poverty reduction on a community level (Oladele, 2024).

However, despite these promising prospects, several challenges hinder the full realization of vocational education’s potential in alleviating poverty. Many programs in Patigi face issues such as insufficient funding, inadequate facilities, and a shortage of qualified instructors. These challenges limit the reach and effectiveness of vocational training, preventing a large segment of secondary school graduates from acquiring the necessary skills to break out of the poverty cycle. Moreover, there is often a disconnect between the skills taught and the actual needs of the local market, which can lead to underemployment even among trained individuals (Akinola, 2023; Oladele, 2024). This study, therefore, critically examines how vocational education can be restructured and improved to better serve the socio-economic needs of secondary school graduates in Patigi, with a view to designing effective poverty alleviation strategies.

Statement of the Problem
In Patigi Local Government Area, poverty remains entrenched despite various governmental interventions. One significant contributing factor is the inadequate preparation of secondary school graduates for the competitive job market. While vocational education is intended to provide practical skills that can lead to immediate employment or entrepreneurship, many graduates are unable to translate these skills into sustainable income sources. The root causes include outdated training curricula, a lack of modern equipment, and insufficient linkage between vocational programs and the local economic environment (Oladele, 2024). Consequently, many trained graduates find themselves underemployed or engaged in low-paying jobs that do little to alleviate poverty (Akinola, 2023).

Furthermore, there is a pronounced gap between the potential of vocational education to empower youth and the reality of its implementation in Patigi. Limited resources and poor infrastructural support have hindered the scalability of these programs. Graduates often report that while they acquire technical skills, they lack the business acumen and entrepreneurial support necessary to establish successful ventures. This gap leads to a scenario where the intended benefits of vocational training are not fully realized, and poverty continues to persist among the youth (Akinola, 2023; Oladele, 2024). In addition, socio-cultural barriers and a general lack of awareness about the benefits of vocational education further exacerbate the problem. This study seeks to investigate these challenges in detail, examining the discrepancies between vocational education policy and practice, and proposing actionable strategies to enhance the role of vocational training in poverty alleviation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of vocational education in reducing poverty among secondary school graduates in Patigi.

  2. To identify key challenges in the current vocational training framework that hinder poverty alleviation.

  3. To recommend strategies for aligning vocational training with local market needs to improve economic outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. How does vocational education contribute to poverty alleviation among secondary school graduates in Patigi?

  2. What are the primary challenges faced by vocational training programs in the area?

  3. Which interventions can enhance the poverty reduction impact of vocational education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Vocational education significantly contributes to poverty reduction among secondary school graduates in Patigi.

  2. Inadequate resources and outdated curricula negatively affect the poverty alleviation potential of vocational education.

  3. Strengthening industry and community linkages will improve the effectiveness of vocational training in reducing poverty.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically evaluates the role of vocational education in alleviating poverty among secondary school graduates in Patigi. The findings are expected to inform policy adjustments and practical interventions that enhance the training’s relevance and effectiveness, thereby offering a pathway out of poverty for local youth. By bridging the gap between training outcomes and local market needs, the research contributes to sustainable socio-economic development in the region (Akinola, 2023; Oladele, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to analyzing the impact of vocational education on poverty alleviation among secondary school graduates in Patigi Local Government Area. It focuses exclusively on the training programs and local economic conditions, without extending to other regions or educational levels.
